The bathroom is one of those areas of our home where we get to spend some quality ‘me’ time. So wouldn’t it be stunning if we could transform this private area into a blissful space?

Here are 9 ideas to give your bathroom a makeover and transform it into a modern luxurious one.

1. Make it Grand

Size matters! Don’t feel guilty about making your bathroom(s) big. In your new home, make sure to make at least one of the bathrooms big during the planning stage itself. Think about a room that can accommodate a bathtub, a separate shower space/cubicle, a good-sized basin counter (2.5 ft x 5 ft) with an equally big vanity, a separate WC area, and a separate laundry cabinet to house your robes, towels, etc.

In a renovation project, look to combine your utility or small multipurpose rooms or cover your building setbacks to make the bathroom big. A sum of small & big spaces can be altered to grow the room.

Non-negotiables for a grand bathroom- A long counter with adequate space for a vanity, and separate areas for dry, semi-dry, and wet.

2. Allow natural light inside-

Plan windows, ventilators, and skylights without compromising privacy.

a) Add a skylight- When your bathroom is on the top floor, adding an operable skylight is a great option to drive light and air into the bathroom.

b) Use fluted/frosted glass privacy doors- Where adding light from outside your home isn’t possible, using glazed elements to help the bathroom benefit from borrowing internal light is the next best thing. The easiest way is to incorporate frosted or fluted glass doors.

c) Ensuite bathroom- An en-suite bathroom is connected to a bedroom. The doorway to an en suite bathroom can only be accessed from within the bedroom, making it a private sanctuary. So, making the partition wall using frosted/fluted glass or glass bricks will give way to the light from inside the room.

d) Clerestory windows- High-up, narrow windows effectively bring in a good amount of natural light with a considerable spread into bathrooms.

Seek inspiration from multiple design blogs and portals such as Pinterest to get rid of the clutter above the counter. Cupboards and drawers under the sink; or open shelves; or deep organizer drawers, there are plenty of options. Now, store the extra toiletries or the extra set of towels in the vanity below your counter.
