Deciphering Your Interior Design Style

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Planning a space can be overwhelming at times. With thousands of websites and apps at our disposal, it can be very confusing to shortlist what we want to do. Clients often come to us with numerous design ideas, image references, photos, videos, etc of all things they like and want to do with their space. Toning down the excitement, sometimes it’s difficult to understand the scale and style of that particular reference and how to make it happen. Here, your designers come into play. We help and guide you towards getting a well-designed space that speaks to your style and is also practical and functional at the same time.

Amidst the ocean of images you scroll on Pinterest, discovering your style and translating it to your home design can be a very challenging and exhilarating task. So, let’s see how and what to choose.

The Process

Firstly, let’s understand that a designed space can’t be dysfunctional, so one should identify the usage of that particular area in your day-to-day life. How do you want to use it & what do you want to use it for? Consider your hobbies, daily routines, and interests. Whether you want to have it as a shared space or you want it to be private.

Secondly, try figuring out what feel and vibe are you going for. Whether you want a minimalist design or a bold display; want a modern feel or a traditional décor. Start creating a folder of reference images for your interior designer.

Thirdly, before finalizing the décor, try to know the elements involved in that design and the time required to make them. Discuss the details of all the elements involved with your designer before putting that first nail on the wall.

Finally, work on a budget or financial plan and make important design amends accordingly. Going overboard on a budget can lead to delays and non-completions. Hence, calculated expenditure is always advised.

Styling by the book

There are many styles in interior design and the list is ever-evolving. Some design trends come and go, whereas some are evergreen styles. Each design style has unique elements like décor, furniture, lighting, color patterns, etc. that give it its signature look.

Although, there should be no limits to styling, sometimes when we start to design a space without any theme it can get all over the place. There is a list of style themes like Coastal Chic, Scandinavian, Bohemian, Farmhouse, Contemporary, Industrial, Rustic, etc. Picking a theme of your preference and abiding by the key features of the style can help you design a place beautifully.

Rookie Mistakes

Your interior designer will assist you in getting what you want rather than telling you what you should go for. So, your brief should be clear and comprehensive. Here are some tips to avoid confusing your designer.

Don’t be greedy. There is an 80-20 rule, if you want a space in the room to highlight or pop, you need the other 80% of the space to be subdued. Highlighting every corner of the room with some color, pattern, or design, would end up looking arrhythmic. So, allow neutral spaces inside your rooms so that the highlights stand out.

Choosing the wrong colors can also be a significant mistake, it can impact the ambiance, mood, and look of the room. So it’s better to have small test samples painted on the wall before getting the entire thing painted. Always try to find balance within a room through the colors and textures used on walls, furniture, and curtains. Your interior designer’s input here can be of a lot of value.

Oversized furniture or small ones is yet another problem. It is not advised that you be rigid on the designs that you have found in a magazine or a showroom. Rooms don’t always look like those pictures in catalogs. So, when you are using the room, how much seating is needed or what kind of furniture is required should be considered. Furniture should be chosen considering the scale of the room as well as the circulation space around the furniture. Use your interior designers’ judgment to your advantage.

Bad Lighting- too much light or limited lighting i.e. too dim or too harsh lighting can simply kill your space. The light should always be planned according to the room. You should have three kinds of lights; task, ambient, and accent. Task lights should be ample lighting to make the room functional eg LED ceiling lights, tube lights, etc and ambient and accent lights just elevate the look and feel of the room eg lamps, chandeliers, cob lights, etc.

Trust your designer. Designing your space can be irresistible. It is based a lot on sharing your piece of mind with your designer and trusting the process. You will have a million ideas and inspiration and you might want to do it all. We take up all your ideas, select the best and work on an ergonomic plan to personalize your space based on your liking.
