Water seepage is one of the most common Indian household problems. Seepage can cause many Structural damages and also damages to Home interiors such as blisters on walls or flakes of paint peeling off from walls or ceilings. It can also cause mold or mildews on walls which can be extremely harmful to our health. The structural stability of the house may be compromised if there is constant seepage of water within the slabs or beams or columns. Water rusts the steel inside the RCC which makes the structure weak.
So, let us look at the common reasons for water seepage in homes:
Seepage in ceilings
Seepage in the ceiling can be because of waterlogging on the terrace, leakage from the overhead water tank, or the damaged bathroom flooring on the upper floor.
Reason: This mainly happens due to deteriorated waterproofing on the terrace or on the bathroom floor above.
The solution: Application of proper water proofing compounds on the slab, which act as a membrane before laying of tiles on the slab. In case there is already existing waterproofing, the cracks in plaster (if any) of parapet walls and slab of the roof should also be filled with crack sealing agents and later waterproofing agents must be applied. Where terrazzo and tiles are present, the tile joints should be properly filled with grouting material to prevent water seepage from in between.
Dampness of walls
Water seepage in walls is usually caused by leakage in the drainage pipes and water supply pipes.
Reason: These pipelines may be old and corroded or some portion of the pipe may be broken or loosened due to wear and tear. The dampness of walls may also be due to the water seeping through the slab into the walls.
The solution: The major water leakage problem in walls can be solved by repairing the leakages in the pipelines. And, waterproofing solutions are the best when the reason is water spreading from the ceiling.
Formation of molds or fungus on walls
There is even the formation of molds or fungus on walls and ceiling
Reason: Due to increased humidity and lack of ventilation.
The solution: This type of fungus on the walls and ceiling can be removed with the use of bleach and cleaners. Increasing ventilation and improving the insulation of walls help a lot in preventing dampness and hence, also prevents the formation of molds or fungus.
Sometimes there is seepage of water in the walls from the foundation and wet ground. This causes blistering in paint and also results in the formation of white deposits due to water rising up with capillary action. This problem can be treated with re-plastering of the wall with added plasticizers and then the application of a waterproof coating to the paint.
